Hard Drive
The hard drive is the foremost area in the computer where all data is kept. The hard drive also contains the hard disk and operating system. The functionality of the hard drive is fairly simple. The data in the hard drive is housed magnetically by magnetic disks that record all data. The computer then takes information that is stored in the hard drive by reading its magnetic polarities, which are binary code. The hard drive's purpose is to be the main storage area of data (pictures, movies, documents and applications, for example). It is also meant as a place where data is kept intact when the computer's power is off so that it does not get lost. In terms of how hard drives affect end users, they store all the computer's data, which means that if it breaks down, users would lose all of their schoolwork. Just imagine a student in the middle of a research essay when the computer screen goes blank and everything is lost. This would be devastating for serious students. For this reason, sufficient and well cared for hard drives are a must. Also, good hard drives are important for computer performance. If users have a bad hard drive, they could go through many occasions of defects and bugs. This fact would be an irritant for when students work on assignments. Lastly, the specifications of a hard drive that students should look for when buying a computer include a short speed/ transfer rate (7200 RPM), maximum interface (SATA 2), large capacity (500 GB or a TB), effective RAID setup (RAID 0 or 1) and a large buffer size (8 or 16 MB).
